FireViewer and FireConverter FAQ
  1. Please read the manual.

  2. How do I uninstall FireViewer Suite? Add/Remove Programs in the control panel asks for a disk I don't have.

Run the installer program again. It will ask if you want to upgrade/reinstall. Click "cancel." It will then ask if you want to uninstall. Click OK, and FireViewer Suite will be removed.

  3. Trouble getting FireViewer to work with a memory card.

Visit our special Removable Media Card FAQ to address this.

  4. Trouble getting web pages onto FireViewer.

Visit our special FireViewer HTML FAQ to address this.

  5. FireConverter won't open my video file.

Only the Windows version of FireConverter will convert video. FireConverter converts AVI and MOV, but not MPG. To open MOV files, you first need to install QuickTime. If you find your AVI files won't open, try first opening and saving them using Smacker from RAD Game Tools.

  6. When I try to open an image in FireViewer, I get the message "Fatal Alert" and I must restart my Palm.

The two most common causes of this are:

    • Not enough free space on your Palm. This is by far the most common. Simply delete a large image or video, then try again to view the problem image.
    • "Hacks" and other incompatible 3rd-party software. "Hacks" use up memory when other applications are running, and affects the way some Palm operations work. Try turning off such applications, then open the image again.

If you still have problems, please send a support request with the details.

  7. How do I delete an image or video?

From FireViewer's main list view, HOLD DOWN the stylus on the name of the image. A popup menu will appear with a "Delete..." option.

  8. How do I determine which version of FireViewer I have?

    Please follow these instructions:

    1. Turn on your Palm device. Select the 'Menu' silkscreen icon.
    2. Select the 'App' menu and select 'Info'.
    3. Select the Box labeled 'Version'.
    4. Scroll down the Application list until you see either 'Viewer' or 'FireViewer'. Your version is shown on the right.

  9. How do I create and view private images and videos?

First, turn on your Palm's security feature. Launch the "Security" application, which is pre-installed on every Palm. Choose "Show Records," "Mask Records" or "Hide Records," and set your Palm's security password. In our opinion, "Mask Records" is the most useful setting, because it leaves a gray box visible in place of the private item.

Next, run FireViewer and choose an item to make private. Tap and HOLD on the name of the image, select "Details," and check the box marked "Private." Thereafter, you will be prompted for a password whenever you open that item.

If, in the Security application, you chose "Hide Records," then your private FireViewer items will not appear, and there will be no way to select or open them. The only way to open them is to turn off your Palm's security in the Security application.

To make the image public again, you must either uncheck the Private box for that image in FireViewer, or turn off your Palm's security altogether in the Security application.

  10. What is the upper limit on image size?

There is no limit other than the amount of storage space in your Palm's main memory. For example, if you had 7 MB free, you could view an image that takes up about 7MB of space. As for theoretical limits, FireViewer can view images over 32000 x 32000 pixels.

  11. How do I create a slideshow?

For FireViewer v4.0 or above, follow these steps:

    • Place each of the individual images (in .pdb format) that will make up the slideshow into the Palm Install Tool. Then, HotSync the images onto your Palm device.
    • Open FireViewer.
    • Select the first image that will form the slideshow by tapping & holding on the image name until you get a pop up menu. Select details.
    • Select 'Category' and from the category drop down menu select 'Edit Categories'.
    • Create a name for your slideshow, such as 'Slideshow1'. Return to the Image Details screen.
    • Change the category for the slideshow's first image to the category name you just created.
    • Select each image of the slideshow sequentially and change the category to the name (i.e. 'Slideshow1').
    • When finished, select your new category (ie. 'Slideshow1') in the upper left and select the first image.
    • Use the hardware's 'up' and 'down' scroll buttons to move through the slideshow.
    • Note: you cannot change the category of an image stored on a memory card.

  12. After I convert a URL using FireConverter, it does not HotSync to view in FireViewer.

Click the icon for the hotsync manager in the lower right corner of your screen, then choose custom and see if the FireViewer conduit is listed there. It should be set to synchronize files. If it is not there, please restart your HotSync Manager in the Palm Desktop software.

  13. How do I use "My Links" that automatically installs when I install FireViewer on my handheld?

If you have an Internet connection for your handheld device, you may connect to our FirePublisher server to view demo content including; streaming videos, a live web cam from the Firepad office, field force automation demos and much more by clicking on "My Links" once you have established a connection.

  14. The names of my images are listed in the Main List view but tapping on them to view brings up a "Missing Object..." error message?

You can either delete FireViewer and reinstall again, as long as you have all your images saved to HotSync again. Or, if you are using a third party tool such as Insider or FlashPro, you can delete the FireViewer database called RootObj-View.pdb from your device, then launch FireViewer. Or lastly, on your desktop, find the backup folder and delete the Rootobj-View. It is usually something like C:\Palm\Your User name\backup....

  15. Does FireViewer support sound?

    Not at this time.

  16. I'm creating a FireViewer video. How do I resize it to fit the Palm screen?

FireConverter does not resize your video. If you have a video that is larger than 160x160 pixels, it will be cropped to fit. To make your video look better, try using a popular video editing tool like Premiere for Windows (free evaluation version available at Adobe.com), or iMovie (free with every new Mac). Both of these will let you resize your movie to 160x120 pixels. Then, use FireConverter to convert the video to FireViewer format, and it will look much better.

  17. Can you help me choose PDA hardware for my school district or classroom?

We recommend against this. Details here.
